i need help identifying a painting i saw in the louvre some years ago. It was of a man holding what i think was his dead wife in his arms, his face was clearly anguished and distressed and his wife was white and lifeless. I have no idea what it is called or who painted it. Help!

I've been looking for information on the painting for 30 years and thanks to your query and the Internet I think I found it. I believe it is entitled The Burial of Atala by Anne-Louis Girodet. Here is much more about the artist and this painting (a very long address out of the Art Institute of Chicago, but searched by AOL):

Glad you found it. I've been to the Louvre a bunch of times but I don't recall that painting.
