I'm doing research on the typeface Franklin Gothic designed by Morris Benton, so I need some background on the art movements of the time that might have influenced his designs. What was the art movement that was most popular at the turn of the century. Is it too early for modernism?

Morris Benton and Franklin Gothic (designed 1902)
I have not researched Morris Benton myself so may be off target here..... Could he have been influenced more by the Arts and Crafts Movement than by a particular art style/period? Arts and Crafts Movement was 1870 to 1900 (about that time). Regards, Judy Decker |
