After having been to Fallingwater, I still have a million questions unanswered... Along the stairs from the main house to the guest house, there are some "details" in the ironwork whch I read as influences from the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, or possibly dragon scales as influenced by Japanese art/architecture. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
I have been amazed by thsi building for 35 years and am interested in any other comments/observations... Thank you. |

Although it sounds like a lovely vision, I'm not sure I buy that FLW was all that concerned with Aztec gods and Japanese culture. His point was simplicity, which could certainly have been inspired by Japan. But the idea of firm geometric structures and bold horizontal lines falls away from that theory. He really was inspired by the environment of his projects, which clearly impacted the design in "Falling Water". He incorperates outside elements into his structure without distorting the fact that it is a harsh man made object in nature. He was a modern American artist without a doubt, and although I'm sure he did his research on Japanese and Aztec culture, I don't think it was a part of his asthetic.
...but that's just me |
