Recently saw an oil painting framed under glass at a local auction. It was painted in 1938 and the frame was old but well sealed. However, the inside of the glass covering the painting was covered in small circular staining which could be seen from a side angle. Any ideas on what could have caused this on the inside of a sealed glass covered frame?

Hi John, Could be, but it looked like dry water splash stains in which case the frame must have been opened. Just think that if I had opened such a frame I would have made sure the glass was clean on the inside before resealing it.

Don't really know, but if it was at an auction then there's a pretty good chance it could have been opened up for inspection and then resealed.

It was at an auction so I guess that's what has happened. Thanks for that.
