Help to identify surreal painting - perhaps entitled "Adornment of the Virgin"
I know I saw this painting 2-3 times on the ground floor of the Guggenheim in Manhattan in the 80's, but I have not been back, and cannot find it in a net search. Can anyone help ?
It is a large oil about 4-6 feet tall with a title somewhat as above. Reds and golds. A Renaissance woman - unclear if she is meant to be a type of the Blessed Virgin - is being sumptuously attired by her handmaidens. At first it merely seems a gorgeous picture. But when you really look at it you see beetles and other vermin crawling out of the buttonholes and other orifices of the dress. It is not as obvious as Dali or Bosch but to my untutored eye, surreal though in a more traditional style.
Any ideas ? Thanks !
