This is going to sound very vague. I took a Music Theory class in college and in my textbook, the authors used pictures of paintings to describe certain types of music (Baroque, Renaissance, etc.). I was very struck by this one painting and have been trying to figure out what and who it is by for years. This is the best description I can give. If it sparks anything in anyone out there, let me know!
A dark cobblestone road, looks somewhat like an alley, that begins on the far left of the painting and curves around until the far right. To the left of the cobblestone there is a wall. All along the wall (curving around the bend) there are alcoves, spaced about 5 feet apart, and in each alcove there is a mermaid statue. Looks like the setting is European and the statues are uniform, very stoic and dark, not like your typical whimsical, colorful mermaid. That is the best description I can give. I know it is a longshot...... Thanks!!!!! |

Stab in the dark -- could it be John Atkinson Grimshaw? Sounds kind of like him. Check out some of this works:
