I noticed quite a few similar posts in this forum, sorry to be such a copy cat. lol I have a print of a painting done in 1868, by a W. Raphael. I can't find any information on this artist through any quick google search that I've tried thus far.
![]() ![]() The piece has been in my family since my great-grandfather saw it on a friend's wall in the early 20th century. He had an interest in it, apparently 'cause of his interest in French history, so his friend gave it to him. I believe it depicts a scene from the French Revolution of 1848 (but I could be absolutely wrong as I've not researched this at all). I think it would be nice to know *something/anything* more about the original painting, print or artist... especially since it hangs on my wall and is the kind of picture that requires story to make up for it's lack of "prettiness" (though I don't find it unattractive). Do you know of anywhere else I could look for/request this information? |

I don't know anything about him, but there is a William Raphael (Canadian artist, 1833-1914).

RAPHAEL" in block letters. I wouldn't say the handwriting itself is that close, but it's certainly suggestive: http://cybermuse.gallery.ca/cybermus...jsp?mkey=37870 |

Yup, that would all make sense. Now I just have to find out what the image actually depicts. Thanks! |

William Raphael was my great-great-grandfather who was married to Ernestina Danziger and were parents of 8 children. There is a bio on Wikipedia and if you google William Raphael, Canadian Artist, you will find lots of info. One of their children was Pauline (or Paulina) who was my grandmother's mother (married to Abraham Kayton, of Norfolk, VA). Pauline died in childbirth and I have never met any of my Canadian cousins since no one in the family ever mentioned them possibly because they were Jewish although my grandmother and her four siblings were probably not told much about their ancestry because after Pauline died they were raised by a couple who were Syrians. Abraham died of yellow fever.
