Picasso's influences, in developing cubism:
Picasso famously asserted that, "--Cezzane is the father of us all..." That might be a good place to start, in terms of thinking about the development of an "analytical" style of painting. Also consider Picasso's working relationship with Braque. I would suggest consulting John Richardson's Life of Picasso, vol. 1-2. I'd spend some time looking at Picasso's earlier works, and especially the body of work he was involved in just before moving into cubsim. You might consider Picasso's landscapes of that period, and also his interest in "primitive" sculpture: African masks and icon-carvings, and also ancient Iberian stone carvings. All of that having been said, if this is to be an "--expressive" essay, I take it to mean that you will be developing and describing your own response to cubism?? And from that angle, I would encourage you to visit the actual paintings, and spend a good amount of time observing them: how and where do they lead your eye? what are the first things you notice, and then how do those observations change over time? does the painting communicate a pattern of thought or emotion to you? how does the painting affect your own thoughts and feelings? good luck to you, b. smart |

I would really enjoy hearing a very argumentative essay. I personally want to hear an argument about him getting his techniques from other artists.
amazingly, me. |
