Hi, any info on the following two watercolours would be most appreciated. They've been in my family for years and only recently re-discovered. I'm guessing they're by a Japanese artist. Signed: Hayami

Interesting paintings. About how many years in the family? Any idea where obtained?
Pity about the foxing on the first painting. Anything written on the back of the paintings? |

Hi, I've found out that they both belonged to my Great Grandmother who often attended sales / auctions in the Oxfordshire / Berkshire area. So it's likely that is where they would have been obtained and that they would have been in the family for around 50+ years.
We're unsure about anything being written on the backs as they are both still framed but I hope that all helps. Thanks, Paul. What would be the best the best way to treat the foxing? |

That's a difficult problem. There is quite a lot of foxing on the first one. I have treated a watercolour painting successfully using a hydrogen peroxide solution 3% (obtained from any chemist) by very careful dabbing on the spots but in my case it was only a couple of spots. I think in your case I would try and find more about the painting first. Is the painting in a glassed frame or open? Do you have a local art specialist or restorer that you could ask for advice? It is a very attractive and interesting painting well worth protecting. Have you tried searching Japanese sites? As a Japanese pre-war image it could have monetary value.

Thanks for the tip. Don't worry, I won't be doing anything until I find out some more about them. They are both behind glass.
The search continues. |
