Hello everyone -
I'm in an Art History course and would really appreciate it if you guys could collaborate with me and answer some questions to help me with an assignment! The assignment is to post to a discussion forum and get some feedback. Here are my questions: 1. If you follow this link: http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore...of_ptahsh.aspx What do you think the significance of the false door is? 2. If you follow this link: http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore...tue_of_ny.aspx Other than being a statue of the deceased person, do you think the statues played any other role? Could they have been some sort of a superstition? Thank you! |

I think the false door symbolizes a means of egress for the souls of deceased kings. As a king this made sure that they were never confined against their will, even in the afterlife.

I think that the statues were there to remind descendants of the dead. I also think that there were strong superstitions towards these statues as the article suggests. If the body of the deceased was destroyed there is no doubt in my mind that friends and relatives would honor the spirit that they believed occupied the statue.

1. If you follow this link:
http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore...of_ptahsh.aspx What do you think the significance of the false door is? I believe the false door was really important to the Egyptian, because they considered the "immortality" significantly. Therefore, the false door can be the way to the next world where people may go after they die. So the Egyptian may make the false door at the tombs. 2. If you follow this link: Other than being a statue of the deceased person, do you think the statues played any other role? Could they have been some sort of a superstition? I am not sure about the statue's role exactly, I thought the statue may be a portrait, because it has a realistic visual of the woman. but I also believe it could be a sort of a superstition. I'm also waiting that someone's reply for the same class now!!! Could you do this for me? my post's title is papyrus from the Abusir papyri.... Although the links on my post are something wrong, but they are on the same page with yours, and I put their title on my post, so you can find it! Thanks, |

Well hello, you must be in my art history class! haha I'll comment on yours if you comment on mine!
In terms of the false door, I believe it was used to either confuse thieves because that may have been common with tombs back then because the poor would have known it was was a wealthy person and that their are belongings inside....however, I think they also may have thought it to confuse evil spirits or something of the sort...idk if they even really believed in evil spirits haha I think they may have been! We read something about how they may have made them for the Ra (soul) to go if the body every got damaged! |
