What is the art community's consensus on reframing old paintings? It is often said that reframing an old painting will devalue it. What are the opinions of our contributors?

If it's the original frame the artist used then I would leave it, both from a commercial and philosophical point of view. Beyond that, I don't know what considerations would apply.

It's not always possible to know whether it is original in the case of an antique painting. I've a couple of watercolours which were in very poor condition damaged frames which were beyond repair. Replacing the mount boards etc with conservation quality etc really meant replacing the frames also although I suppose an expert professional could restore the frame at a price - but how far do you go? My own restoration produced a much more attractive result as far as I'm concerned than the original frame on purchase and I'm the one enjoying the work of art. But I do have concerns about the philosophical aspect as you say. I guess its a balance depending on the value of the work. |
