I agree that many people go with the fashion of what the critics think. It's important to stick to what we ourselves think and feel, instead of agreeing with those who seem to have the right interpretations. I don't know why but i can't appreciate a lot of modern art; it's nonsense to me, disorderly, ugly even, and people who say it's great just puzzle me. No offence though; everyone's entitled to his opinion.

There was an excellent PBS show on Modern Art recently. They pegged the high point of the movement from DeKoening to Warhol (Wiipedia tells us that the movement began in the late 1800s).

DeKoening was among the first to anticipate the transition from an industrial to an information society.

To understand modern art (and late modernism or postmodernism) one can begin by looking up these terms at Wikipedia or other sources. It also helps to be aware of socio-political history and current events.

My understanding is that things like Dada were a reaction against the slaughter of WWI. In part, the artists no longer wanted to make "pretty" art for the bourgeoisie. And if one looks around at the modern world, one is often confronted with banality. Realizing that cutting edge artists (from da Vinci to Warhol to someone like Jenny Saville) probably have IQs well above the average, one must understand that very little escapes their gaze or comprehension. The best amongst them are the brightest of our age or any age, and we can all benefit from their unique and acute visions.

So, I recommend that you begin to look, to listen, to read. You are living in the age of Modernism/Postmodernism -- you will be rewarded for an understanding of the artists of your age.
