Default Old Masters or ?????

Hi
Im new to the forum, and was wondering if I could get some opinions about an old painting I found many years ago..It was lying in mud and I had to wipe it off with a wet paper towel to see what it was..Im sure that wasnt the proper thing to do to a painting, but,I wasnt sure what it was at the time..

Thanks

I like it. It might be a good copy after a famous painting, but I don't recognize it offhand.

Default Poynter maybe, or other Neoclassicist

Just taking a stab at this one...

...reminds me of some of the works by Sir Edward John Poynter (1836-1919). Check his Roman Boat Race or his Lesbia and Sparrow and perhaps they will lead you in other directions. At any rate, I'd start with Neoclassicism... Good luck.
