It had to happen, the New York Times rolled out its annual special feature about art musuems and lo and behold they finally published an article about museum websites. This is a subject the Times has notoriously avoided since the internet became a way of life for people. The article talks about how most people today visit museums online rather than in person. Is that news?? Well the figures cited in the article are pretty spectacular. Almost 14 millions visitors to the Met web site, and 10 million to the Getty. The article was written by Carol Vogel who covers the art market and its dealers.

Needless to say the Times has never mentioned the existence of Artcyclopedia or any of the other websites which helped make it easy to look up works of art and artists and where they were located. Remember (I do) how difficult it used to be to find museum websites, and how badly designed they were, and how parsimonius they were about putting images online.
