I've come across some excellent museum websites, and some truly awful ones over the last few years. Would be curious to learn others opinions about suggestions of good websites. Also, what makes a good museum website? E.g. is it usability, online exhibitions, info about pieces in their collections, user interaction, localization (available in multiple languages), online shop, embrace new innovation (e.g. podcasts, widgets) etc.
Here are some of the sites I consider excellent: Tate: http://www.tate.org.uk/ (Loads of info, ability to search collection, easy navigation) Art Institute of Chicago: http://www.artic.edu/aic/ Van Gogh Museum: http://www.vangoghmuseum.nl |

I always list the Rijksmuseum as #1. They used to have a hard-to-navigate site with huge, superb images. Then a year or so ago they did a complete makeover, and now they have a fairly good site using those same great scans.
The only problem really is that their collection doesn't have the breadth of many other great museums. Mainly Dutch masters from the Baroque era. http://www.rijksmuseum.nl/ |

Hi there,
I'm new to this forum and thought I'd comment on one of my favorite museum websites. The Saatchi Gallery has extensive information on tons of artists, including reviews of artists and a showcase of their works. The site also has essays on contemporary art, a virtual tour of the museum, and a forum where you can talk more extensively about open debates. In my opinion, it's one of the better museum websites I've seen and navigated through. I think that the site has some good user interactivity and also has a lot of information about artists and showcases, which in my opinion makes for a pretty good museum website. http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk |

Greetings,
I look for Museum sites with good on line exhibits/collections. I have many good museums linked on this page: http://www.princetonol.com/groups/ia...dle/museum.htm and many USA museums linked here: http://www.princetonol.com/groups/ia...le/museum2.htm on this page, I also have links to the education materials at many of the museums. All of the Smithsonian museums are good. Regards, Judy Decker |
