"He's not my favorite art critic but he's writing about one of my favorite artists."
That is, Peter Schjeldahl at the New Yorker who doesn't make my A or B list of art critics, writing about the Venentian painter Veronese who does make my A list of painters . Its a lovely suprising piece on a small exhibit of Veronese currently at the Frick. It brightened my day http://www.newyorker.com/printables/...4craw_artworld |

Hello Joe,
I can't say I admire many critics, as most of them want to put themselves between the viewer and the work of art they are viewing. Just curious though, who do you like? What about some of the naysayers at Modern Painters? Regards, Pat McDermott |

That's a very good question and if I had the time I might do an article for Artcyclopedia.com answering it
In the meantime I like Andrew Graham Dixon, Martin Gayford, Richard Dorment all of whom write for the Telegraph. Also Jonathan Jones for the Guardian. Jed Perl for the New Republic, and Arthur Danto for the Nation. The last two don't write regularly enough for my money. Robert Hughes when he is interested is one of the best art critics alive but he hasn't been writing regularly since his car accident. |
