Mark Rothko (1903-1970) was long been considered one of the most important mid 20th century painters. Last year he emerged as one of its most eloquent writers about art.
A long lost manuscript entitled "The Artist's Reality: Philosophies of Art" edited by his son Christopher Rothko consisting of "beautifully written and clearheaded essays... addressing art in terms of tradition, myth, history, philosophy, form, politics, biology, and emotion" was published last year and is now out in paperback. Lance Esplund writing in the New York Sun called it "one of the most important documents written by an Abstract Expressionist or by an American painter." Also just published is a collection of shorter pieces " Writings on Art" (Yale University Press, 192 pages, $25), edited by Miguel Lopez-Remiro consists 90 documents - essays, lectures, statements, letters, and interviews from 1934-69. |
