Disharmony between Materials and Spirits
It is considered that materials enrich our lives in a majority of the phenomena processing in present society. Also, judgment of values is over-weighted toward materialistic or physical aspects rather than spiritual ones. However, ironically, it is different when it comes to labor. Compared to spiritual labor, physical labor which produces commodities is more likely to be despised.

Today’s conveniences of human beings are the results created at a laborer’s fingertips like a touch of a mother’s hand. Despite the fact that physical labor using manual skills sometimes demands dirty environment and physical tiredness, it is not recognized well in society compared to the valued spiritual labor. <Conversion as symbolic values> is a work created from this perspective, but is not completed yet due to material problems.

Diamonds and Fingernails
I got the idea from Damien Hirst’s ‘For the Love of God’, the skull with diamonds. I thought that I should put fingernails, traces of life, instead of diamonds in the skull, the element of facial structure. Although fingernails and diamonds have noticeable differences, they also share commonalities. For example, a diamond is most solid and transparent among minerals dug from the earth. A fingernail, meanwhile, as a body part thrown away during a life, has similar features as a diamond. Moreover, a diamond and a fingernail play the role of decoration and a tool respectively.
The factor that creates the biggest difference among them is rarity and processing.
Values derived from rarity need to be reviewed. The exclusive enterprise that produces a diamond controls distribution in an effort to maintain its values of rarity and even burns them to produce carbon. However, the very values created at a laborer’s fingertips cannot be adjusted. The results of manual labor reflect the effort. It is a fingernail, in the meantime, that supports the labor. A fingernail sacrifices itself like an advance guard to protect fingertips at workplace and serves as a tool occasionally.



Values of Fingernails with by-products
I have dirt under my fingernails during a physical labor process or in a daily routine. I try to look at them as by-products of my life and also something that genuinely proves my physical labor. Thus, I believe that to donate fingernails along with their by-products not sold anywhere can create certain symbolic values as well as a relationship.

I need your donation of your fingernails in order to complete the work. Of special note, donation of your fingernails that have by-products of your lives can create <conversion to symbolic values> that may reflect the essence of life phenomena.
Additionally, regardless of your skin color or nationality, if you paint your fingernails that have as the similar color as your skin in a color that can express yourself and cut them before making a donation, it can contribute to another work which will express co-existence of diverse values.
