Default "Gauguin" ceramic is a forgergy (NY Times)

Dear Art Conversation Visitors,

Work Believed a Gauguin Turns Out to Be a Forgery
By CAROL VOGEL

A stoneware sculpture thought to be a rare and early example of an unglazed ceramic by Gauguin has been exposed as a clever fake produced by a family of expert forgers.

From the article:

When “The Faun,” a stoneware sculpture, was bought by the Art Institute of Chicago a decade ago, it was hailed as one of the museum’s most important acquisitions in 20 years.

But what curators at the time thought was a rare and early example of an unglazed ceramic by Gauguin — created in the 1880s, it was believed — has been exposed as a clever fake produced instead in the 1990s by a family of expert forgers.
