Default The engine of art

We use the word "art" to refer to a variety of media such as the photograph, oil painting, acting, dance, theater, motion picture, novel and music.

What is it about these sundry disciplines which allows them to crowd under the same umbrella? Could there be a formative engine common to all of the arts? Can this aesthetic mechanism's gears and pulleys be identified, and relationships among them understood, through the study of the tensions that exist among the elements of art in every field?

It is the attempt of my book, The Aesthetikon, to identify and blueprint the engine common to the arts by attending to the words of artists as they comment on their creations.
