Red face Can anyone identify this painting? Its driving me mad!

I am convinced that the lady standing is Mary Tudor with a very young Elizabeth kneeling. Does anyone know who painted this? Or if I am wrong, who it could be? I'm trying to find out who the other people in the picture are and when and why it was painted. An artists name would be a good start! Its becoming an obsession!!

Many thanks for any responses.

Nicola.

Hi, I don't recognize the painting specifically, but it reminds me of Delaroche's painting of The Execution of Lady Jane Grey. That could be a clue to the subject, or the artist, or at least the period.

If anyone is interested, I have discovered that this painting is called "Lady Jane Grey, Before Queen Mary - Pleading for the life of her Husband, Lord Gilford Dudley". The owner beleives that it is from the 'Titian' school or could be a Flemish painter.

John - any more clues??? Its still driving me mad! Many thanks.

Well it certainly isn't 'Titian School' and I very much doubt it is Flemish either! I suspect Victorian and English...

I tend to agree, especially given the subject matter. It does appear to be by a very accomplished painter, though.

I agree, it is by a very accomplished painter and begs the question whether it is an oil or a lithograph?

If you can show the back of the canvas or let us know if it is a litho or not, that would be a good start. It's cool, no matter what!

Thank you for all your input! I have had another look and the owner of the original (mine is a sort of old print on canvas) states that

"The paint is very old and has been laid upon a chalky material which has been slurried and embedded upon a mesh like material."

Does that give anyone any clues?
Look forward to hearing from you.
(I must admit I always thought it was 19th century-ish)

Smile Still pulling my hair out......

Is there anyone who can yet shed anymore light on this painting? I'd be so grateful. Its one year one and I am still baffled.

Thank you anyone.

Hi;

Here's a little information. If you go to this site and scroll down a wee bit you will find the same print with a note attached stating this = "This scene is fantasy as it never took place. It is very similar to an illustration by George Cruikshank entitled "Jane Imploring Mary To Spare Her Husband's Life." that appears in William Harrison Ainsworth's book "The Tower of London".

Submitted by It's Owner - Bob West.

And armed with the exact title, I found a reference at the UK National Archives to such a painting by "Bachereau", i.e. Victor Bachereau-Reverchon.

Good one John. I missed that.

Here's auction results of some of his work. Sadly he died quite young.
