I am trying to locate the painting of a little girl standing in a corner with her dog. I have seen several on the internet but they are very 'busy'. The one I am thinking is very simple, plain white walls, the girl in a plain perhaps white dress, and the dog. Someone said they thought the title of the painting was "shame" but I'm not certain of that. Someone also said the dog was a collie, but again, I'm not certain of that. Google searches on the key words keep bringing up a painting that is much too 'busy'. The one I'm thinking of is very 'plain'. This hung in our hall in the 50's. Any help very much appreciated! Thank you for taking the time to reply if you have info and/or ideas.

The one suggested by Eirene could be correct, but also note that the link she provided is to the work of aa copyist Chernakov (??). The original painting was done by Charles Burton Barber - A Special Pleader. Here's a link to the Barber painting: http://www.historylink101.com/art/Famousab/barb564033.html
Or...it could be a work by Briton Riviere - Compulsory Education (Naughty Boy). This painting was used in the Pears soap ads around 1909 - note it's sometimes attributed to Burton Barber (and called The Reading Lesson --but that's wrong). here's a link: http://www.artchive.com/web_gallery/...Education.html If not, keep trying Burton Barber -- he did many paintings of little girls with dogs. Other artists who painted many "girls with dogs" are Arthur Elsley and Frederick Morgan. All suggested artists enjoyed painting genre scenes (everyday life); they were all British and painted duriing the Victorian and/or Edwardian periods when girls and dogs were very popular. |

I believe you are correct ARTalker. It is Charles Burton Barber. I knew that painting didn't look quite right.

I think I know the one and we had it in our home since 1961 or earlier. It was in my sister's bedroom when she was an infant. It is very plain and not the ones of the painting. Very cute little girl standing in the corner with a small dog and there was a poem that went with it to explain that the little girl was sent to the corner over something bad the dog did and so the dog was there in the corner with her in shame. It is nearly all in a white or off white background to emphasize the girl and the dog. I write from memory but will take a photo. I wish I could find the poem that went with it.

I actually have a copy of both of these pictures and just realized this morning that the little girl in both of them are identical. Same pose and everything only the dog and the backgrounds are different. The one with the jack Russell territory belonged to my great great grandmother and as a child I always loved it. I recently found the one with the collie at a flea market and had to have it because I loved my grandmothers so much.

I have a large, professionally-framed, fine quality print of exactly the picture about which you are inquiring. Are you looking to purchase such?

Thanks for the info. My mom had bought a framed print for my great niece (her great grandaughter). She gave it to her at Easter, and had asked me if I knew the name or history of the print. She almost didn't give it to her because even thought she thought it was cute- she said it was just so sad!

I have a painting by Pears... girl in white dress and blue sash leaning up against a brown paneled wall reading a book while a hound dog leans up against her between her and the book. bobkat417@att.net
