Hi! I recently had a family heirloom restored and uncovered the artists signature - Matthew van Salk. I am having a bit of trouble with any information on van Salk or his paintings. I found one of his paintings in the Government collection of UK and they dated his life from 1600-1670. No other details. We would love to find out about our painting which has four ladies sewing around a table. There is Delft style pottery and tiles in the scene. Also, some family crests on stained glass windows.
I would greatly appreciate any information on Matthew van Salk if anyone can help. Sincerely, Quohogbeach |

i have two oil paintings of my great grand parents. the artist's name is matthew van salk, holland. they were painted late 1800's or early 1900's. i am thinking that he may be a reproduction artist. i dont know any more about him. the painting are of dionicio and francesia botiller. they lived in los angeles and he was the tax collecter of beverly hills during his later years.

Could be that you have a painting of Matthijs Theodorus Mauritius van Salk, He is born in Rotterdam - The Netherlands on 26-03-1864, and he past away in Den Hague - The Netherlands on 04-04-1938 He worked in Amsterdam, Haarlem, London, Leipzig (Germany), Paris (France), Madrid (Spain), Venice (Italy), and again in Amsterdam, Den Hague He did his education in Art Academy in Rotterdam He was working as a painter, drawer and Lithographer. He is also known as a copyist Most of his subjects are portrets One of his painting is a copy of a work of Rembrandt and as you can see a real good one. The gallery is asking 3500euro for this painting. |

I also have two portraits by "Matt. van Salk". They are of my two great-great grandparents who lived either in Baltimore, MD, USA or Virginia, USA. The portraits are dated 1929 and that would have been painted after the deaths of the two subjects. I'm guessing that the artist worked off of photographs. As you may be able to see from the attached pictures, they need to be cleaned and re-varnished.

From a photograph or not, those are pretty good portraits. He was obviously a very accomplished painter.

Search on Google under the name of Mathew van Salk. Could be that there was a self-portrait of your grandfather for sale on one the auction sites. Most sites think that he is an American painter. Marianne, you can help us. Is Mathew van Salk and Matthijs van Salk one and the same?
Veel succes met zoeken. |
