Help identifying artist named ?N.Malatn

I have been given a beautiful painting in oil by the above artist. The name appears as N or H Malatn or NM alatn. There does not seem to be a vowel between the t and n. Painting at least 50 years old.
The painting is of two children squatting in what may be Arabic garb, in the desert, with a white-washed town/oasis in abstract in the background. There is a basket of flowers next to one of the children.
Any ideas of artist?

Maybe you could post pictures of the painting and the signature (click "Post reply" below left and use the paperclip icon).

I don't know of any language in which "Malatn" would be a plausible name. It kind of sounds like it might be Russian, and the letters are in Cyrillic. That's just a wild guess, though.
