I am hoping to identify a painting that I absolutely love but for the life of me I can't remember the title or the artist...I'm sure it's quite well known but I have searched all over the internet and can't find any info.
The painting I would guess would be an example of Classicism?! It shows a young woman laying on her left side with her head on her left arm. Her left knee is drawn up to her left elbow and she is asleep. Her right arm rests just below her breats, which are visible through her gown, and her right hand rests on her left arm, next to her face. She is wearing a floaty, see-through gown of a rich peach-orange colour. I seem to remember the title included the word sleep or dream or dreamer, although I could be totally wrong?! And the painting itself reminds me of the Greek style paintings where the women are always beautiful and almost mythological. Thanks for any help you can give me... Cara =) |

Hi, I think the painting you are describing is Flaming June, by Frererick Leighton.
Here's a link. Victorian paintings of this kind were so out-of-fashion in the 1960s that this one was offered at auction at an opening bid of $140, and went unsold! It ended up at a museum in Puerto Rico, but it's temporarily on loan to the Tate Britain in London, where I was lucky enough to see it in person. |
