Smile Roadside Dwelling, by ??

Good Day,

I recently bought this oil painting in a gold wooden frame (20x40). The frame is etched all around with a pattern. It is very european looking. The painting itself is of a country road somewhere, buildings on the left side with a woman figure in red dress. A man is standing near a bridge in the middle/ right side of the painting. It appears faded from age, but it is lovely.

I do not know who painted this? There doesn't seem to be a signature on it (unless it was covered up by the frame?)

On the back it has a label "Academy Arts` Framed Pictures and Wall Decor, Chicago Illinois. No. 77-3530 and Title in pen ``Roadside Dwelling`` The rest of the label is ripped...

Any info is appreciated. This could be a student? When was it painted?

Thank you.

Thumbs up Roadside Dwelling

Yes! That is it! I guess Robert Spencer is the artist. Thank you kindly.

Default Hello

I have that painting too. Is it by Robert Spencer, the Pennsylvania Impressionist, who died in 1931? Or Robert Closson Spencer, an Architect/Painter who died in the 50s?

The signature on this painting doesn't match the known samples of the Spencer who died in 1931. Yet, this print seens to have been extensively sold in the 60s and 70s. This one is a mystery to me, and I would appreciate any advice. Mark Johnson

Default Roadside Dwelling - Robert Spencer ??

Hi,

Yes, good question. I have no idea. The one I have I cannot see the signature (I assume it is under the frame?) I do not know where to even compare signatures....

Maybe one of the experts can tell us.

I do not know how many were made or the value. It looks like the one on ebay is a print. The one I have is much bigger and a painting, I am pretty sure.

Default Roadside Dwelling

We have the same picture, signed, but I'm thinking someone cut it down to fit the frame! We do not have the complete bridge This was in my grandfather's house for years and years. Is there any actual value to it? Thanks!

Susan
