Hello all
I am trying to find a copy of a painting for a Christmas present. I remember the painting being of a large country house set near Keswick in the Lake District I think and a group of people taking afternoon tea/lunch. The scene shows very large floor to ceiling windows overlooking the countryside and the light from the painting is fantastic. I would have only seen it on display in the u.k. and its probably from the impressionism era. I hope someone can help, thanks. |

Eirene, thank you so much for the information on the mystery painting. That's the one I've searched for hours on the internet and I wish I had posted the question on this great site much sooner.
Once again thank you Eirene you've made my day! Lesley |

It's a lovely painting. I wrote the blog post which Eirene refers to in her post, because I also find the painting haunting and elegaic. James Durden lived for a long time in Keswick, and eventually died in the nearby town of Cockermouth (near to where I live myself).
The painting is on permanent exhibition at Manchester's city art gallery, which is probably one of the finest provincial art galleries in the UK, and is also free to enter! Ian |

Hi Ian
I should have known who the painting was by, my hubby was project manager of Manchester City Art Gallery extension back in the 1990's so it was like our second home while the work was going on! We now live down near Gosforth in Cumbria and really miss the Art Gallery in Manchester along with the Bridgewater Hall; another of his jobs. |
