Hello all,
I have a coworker who brought in a painting that he has had in storage for a very long time and I am trying to get information on who the actual artist is (signature reads "Vincent"). According to my coworker, the painting was purchased in France by his grandfather during WWI. He brought it back to America somewhere around 1917-1920 but is not sure of the exact year. This does not appear in any way whatsoever to be a print but I'm no expert so any information you guys could provide would be awesome! Thanks! ![]() |

"Vincent" is one of the most famous signatures in history and the painting is rather Vincent van Gogh-like, so my first thought is that it's likely either a copy or a forgery. This idea must have already occurred to your friend.

Actually it occurred to me the moment I saw it and it also occurred that it is likely a forgery or replica. I went and picked up a Van Gogh book and I was looking at some of the "sketches" that they have never found paintings for and I saw one that looked quite similar:

I guess my overall question is do you think this is actually worth taking to an appraiser or do you believe that there is not a chance this could be a Van Gogh. Thanks |

I'd answer "not a chance", but that's simply based on the probabilities of discovering a new Vincent van Gogh painting in 2011. I'm not an art expert and it looks passably like something he could have done. A lot of paintings known to be by his hand are worse (IMO).
