I'm trying to remember the artist and title of a painting I saw in a textbook. I've tried to research this, but I have been unable to narrow down the search to helpful results with the vague details I recall.
Judging by its use in the textbook, the painting is well-known enough to serve as a common example of the style in which it was painted. The details I remember: The painting is of a dark landscape, with a full moon in the distance towards the right side of the painting. There is at least one tree--possibly several trees, but one is prominent, on the left side, with bare branches extending across the painting. The tree is on a hill, or possibly a cliff. Any help would be appreciated! |

Caspar David Friedrich? He did a number of moonlit scenes.

Thanks for responding. I thought at first that it might be Friedrich, but the style of the painting is quite a bit darker than what I've seen of his works, and I've been unable to find the painting in any online archive of his art.

Or perhaps John Atkinson Grimshaw. Love his work and this gave me an excuse to look at it once again.
The Complete Works- http://www.johnatkinsongrimshaw.org/home-1-96-1-0.html This one is somewhat like you're description. Tree on the right though. ![]() Moonlight on the Lake, Roundhay Park, Leeds Last edited by Eirene : December 1st, 2011 at 01:26 AM. |

Thanks for the link! I love Grimshaw, but none of his paintings match the one I'm looking for.
