Hi, I'm looking for some help on an oil portrait that I have, that was bought at a car boot many years ago.
I'm trying to find out how I go about finding the artist. The painting is a portrait of a lady in a ornate frame, with the words Lady Anne written on the back of the frame. The painting itself is very dark and I'm unable to see a signiture. Should I attempt to find a signiture on it myself, if so how would I go about doing this? I can tell you I have shown a photgraph of it to Southerby's, who have responded with what they feel is in the style of Allan Ramsay. What does this actually mean, could he be the artist or would it be a possible student of his? Thank you in advance. |

You could upload a picture and someone might recognize the painting. I've noticed from my visits to palaces and stately homes in Europe that portraits would often be copied multiple times.
Or conceivably someone might be able to identify the subject with some luck. There must have been a lot of Lady Annes, but not an impossibly high number. |

Possibly Sir Joshua Reynolds? Try a google image search portraits of Lady Anne.
