There is a story in ever town. The stork delivers babies. In the Netherlands "De Ooijevaar" does. In China, Asia, India everywhere these kind of birds exist. Sailors would say the Pelikan delivers babies.
A "Stork Hole" or in Dutch "ooijevaarsnest" is a hatch in a hospital or social institution where parents can leave there child. They maybe criminals, poor or roofless. Some people just don't have the time or strenghth to go long talking with the social help department. The little one gets a new life and a new identity. Sometimes there is a reunion afterall. The parents remain in there rights. Different birds have been used as a symbol for this phenomena. When a baby is born here in the Netherlands parents put a "wooden stork" in their garden. The stork had become the symbol for post delivery as astrology was huge during the interbellum and way before. There are numberlous paintings of such white birds we often call "angels" now. An angle is 5 degrees. The goal is to retrieve these hatches in society. In most towns and countries people think that this is not necsesary anymore. If one wants to respect these painters how they feel about it how could one think different? Does anybody know a good example from such a painting? I want to create a list and see if we can retrieve such social structures. Regards, Martini Moon martinimoon@hotmail.com Last edited by Martini Moon : March 6th, 2009 at 11:58 AM. |

I have no idea what the heck you're talking about or what this has to do with art. Perhaps ask a direct question and less talk about weird life in foreign countries?
PS: it's storks that deliver babies, not pelicans or ostriches. |

I think that reply was a bit harsh?! Would you know the word for Stork in Dutch?!
That's probably all Martini needs really to assist in a more thorough image search. Basically, Martini is saying that in the Netherlands there is a tradition of paintings showing something akin Stork's delivering babies and he wants to find as many examples as possible. |

LOL, I was assuming that in Holland the tradition is that Pelicans deliver babies. It's all arbitrary anyway, and if you think about it the pelican is probably a better choice for that sort of job.
Anyway, I googled "ooijevaar", and it does appear that it refers to the bird we call a "stork". |
