I have a lithograph of the Horse Statue (Residenzbrunnen) in Saltzburg, probably late 1800's. The signature looks like 'Rerfn' and is reasonably clear but open to interpretation. Any help with the signature and/or the artist would be appreciated. Colin

I would say that reads "Perov". There are a number of artists by that name, notably Vasily Perov.
You can try putting a scan of the lithograph into Google's reverse image search to see if anything comes up. Use the little camera icon inside the search box of Google's image search. |

Thank you John for your prompt reply and advice. The line behind the O (second last letter in the signature) confused me into thinking it was an F.
You also introduced me to the search by picture feature of Google images which I didn't realise existed. So I was enlightened in two areas. Unfortunately the image wasn't able to be matched at this time and I have searched many sites in relation to PEROV but as yet haven't progressed much further. So, again thank you for at least helping identifying the surname of the artist - this sort of search becomes enriching and exciting - thankyou Noofa |

No problem. Of course I may not be correct, but at least Perov is a fairly common name and it seems like a good guess. BTW, findartinfo.com lists several different artists by that name. It seems like a long list at first glance, but they list some artists multiple times using different translations of their names from Russian. Looking at the birth/death dates will make it clearer who is who.
