Please help in identifying the artist of this beautiful oil on masonite abstract painting. The signature on the lower left corner has faded over the years, but it appears to read "McNeil." The painting has a lot of texture, with a fabulous array of colors, and it is obvious that someone with professional training created it. The painting measures 12 X 16 inches, and due to the appearance of the masonite on the back, it appears to have been painted circa 1940s-50s. I have attached an image of the painting, and a close-up of the signature. Thanks for any opinions.

It looks like it could be George J. McNeil. It's not really his type of abstraction, but the signature looks like it might be close.

You are correct in that my painting is not the same type of abstraction as George J. McNeil, and actually, the signatures do not match...hard to see the signature on my painting because it has faded over the years.
Thanks for your input, John. Anyone else out there willing to take a shot at who this "McNeil" artist could be? |
