Default Unidentified Expressionist Painting 1919

Can anyone help identify this painting? (Image attached) It's a photocopy from a library book, I think on expressionist painting from about 10 years ago - I have never been able to find it again. I think the artist was from Europe, possibly Germany. I seem to remember from the book that he was badly affected in WW1 or was a contentious objector and fled to an obscure location to paint. The date of the painting is 1919. The signature - difficult to read - I have magnified. Has anyone seen this in a book or on the web or have any suggestions? Your help would be much appreciated.

I guess that the history you remember about this artist is for another painter. The best name for this signature and style of painting is the new zealand artist Roland Shakespeare Wakelin in spite of something not clear at the end of the signature you show. This painter generally signs R.Wakelin but his paintings of 1918 1919 are signed R.S.Wakelin. For the style, it is exactly the one he used during these years.

Thank you so much Saintmarc,
I'm sure you are right. Ten years of searching books on European Expressionists and he was right on my door step all the time. I'll have to start looking again in the New Zealand and Australian Art section of the library. It hasn't been a total waste of ten years though, I have gained a great appreciation for those Expressionists.
Thanks again Saintmarc.
