Hi,
I stumbled across your old message leftonthis site and thought it only appropriate to introduce myself. My name is David Harvey from Milton Keynes, England and I had the privilege of knowing/meeting Darryl many times whilst on his travels around the world, mainly due to the fact that when ever he was in the UK, he used our home as his base and was a firm family friend. My parents first met Darryl whilst in Egypt many years ago and at the time, our home was often “open house” and used as lodgings for foreign students studying in the UK (usually offspring of Diplomats form the local Government office) and the facility was simply offered to Darryl when next in the UK – this however, became a semi-permanent basis and the rest as they say; is history. He often arrived announced in advance, sometimes not in order to surprise and always welcome – once for Christmas which was great. He also stayed at my eldest brother’s home (Peter - also in the Milton Keynes) in the self contained Granny-Annex! Pete being an Architect designed and built the house with a large two story glass atrium, plenty of light and large tropical plants climbing the walls which as you can imagine, was like a moth to a light with Darryl – he stayed for a quite a while…. I once spent an entire morning watching him paint here whilst putting the world to rights from what I can remember. Ironically, my youngest brother (Richard) currently lives in Atlanta (moved his entire home, family, life out there with work a while back) and once again; Darryl having a studio out there, often found himself in a Harvey household for grub and a catch up with the family. My mother (Pauline) kept in contact the most and the family became great fans of his work as you can imagine. As a result we have many originals of various topics (portraits, plants; he even painted the house!!) Sadly, his passing was of great loss to us all... Always on the positive side however, our lives were greatly blessed by having the privilege of knowing this ‘gentle giant’ as a family friend first (the artist always came as a close second) I hope this was of interest to you all. I worked for United Bank of Texas, Austin Tx in the early 80's. Ruben Johnson and Jimmy Johnston ran the bank and in their hall had the original of Romance of Lilies. I was in my early 20's and stopped every time I passed to admire his work. Stargazer Lilies became my favorite flower from that day forward. I later found that Romance of Lilies had been released as an Unlimited Print and I have one. I am now interested in where the original is and if it is for sale. Paula, mpvernick@gmail.com
