Default Identifying old painting-oil on wood

An elderly friend has asked me to try to identify a unsigned painting that he was given well over 30 years ago. It's in another city, and the photo is fairly awful. I can get another photo, but not for a few months when I go for another visit. For some reason he associates Mary and St. Anne with the painting, but that may not be accurate. On the wall it appears to be about 3' X 4'. I'd be grateful for being pointed in the right direction. Does one wrap this and wander into Christie's?

Have you had any luck yet? It looks an interesting painting. Can you post a better image?

Default Oil painting on wood from Seattle area

Hi all,
I saw this posting and thought i'd post a picture that was given to me that was found in a friends house. He didn't want it so he gave it to me. It looks really old but there is no markings on it. Is there anyone on this forum who can either tell me who it is or where to find out?

Looks like a pretty good portrait, but without any idea who the subject is or who the painter is, it's not going to be easy. Hopefully it will turn out to be somebody well known. Also, sometimes there is writing or markings on the frame or on the back of the painting that might provide clues.

Sorry for replying well over a year later but i just saw your response and i checked for any markings on hte frame or the back of the canvas and unfortunately there are no markings. I too hope it's someone famous and since it was found in the Seattle area, i may try to contact some museums out here to see if they recognise the person.
