I have recently inherited a 20 x 30 painting/wood carving whose only identification I have are the initials A. T. G. and the date 1901. A 3x5 card was with it and it claims the title is "Priest in the Vineyeard". Other than that, I have no idea where it originated. What are my options in finding out more?

I did a search of Getty ULAN database, and there is only one artist whose initials are "ATG". That is Albert Theodor Gellerstedt, a Swedish painter who was indeed alive in 1901.
Needless to say, this may not be the correct artist, and that database doesn't always list middle names. But maybe you'll get lucky and this is the right person. You can also try findartinfo.com. They have a long artist list you can browse through. |
