I picked up an original oil at an auction recently, the painting was one of hundreds that had been owned by a wealthy man who was known for his extensive art collection...any how to make a long story short...this painting I got (very cheap) is of a landscape... in the background is three trees and in the foreground there are three mounds, two brown and one green..I thought this was really an odd picture...and then it hit me..could the mounds be unmarked graves??? possibly a memorial picture of some sort...the painting is oil on board and is signed M Fay...it is quite old judging by the framing..old square headless nails hold the frame in place...I was thinking civil war era, does anyone know anything about this artist or if this type of painting is comman...THanks ...Carol

There is a Michael Fay who was recently working as a war artist. That wouldn't make the painting very old, but he seems to be extremely competent. Here's an article about him:

Hi, thanks for your suggestion but the M Fay you are referring to is quite young...this painting was last framed probably before he was born..
