Hi,
New user here. I have a piece of art I inherited from my uncle in Toronto, Canada (He lived in an old house that dated back to the 18th century). I'm sure its not anything but it is a Jamaican scene, oil on canvas, dated '68 and signed either Joan Payne or Joan Paryne. On the back is a sticker of the framers, Robert Hubbard and Son Ltd. Is this anything other than sentimental value? I also have got a real old piece, oil on wood that is in pretty bad shape. There was one of those Antique Roadshow things that came into town and they said it was pretty much a personal portrait on a generic body, worth maybe $500 but pretty much sentimental. Do you agree? I have attached a picture of each. |

Looking at the signature on the West Indian painting I wonder if the name might be "Ivan Payne" ? There was an artist from Barbados of this name. See http://www.iadb.org/EXR/cultural/cat.../reartists.htm for biography and an example of his work.

Just had another look around and theres a painting by Ivan Payne in this PDF catalogue http://www.nagc.bb/SiteAssets/InTheMiddleOfTheOcean.pdf in which his signature can be seen clearly. Like the one on your picture it could be easily misread as Joan. Clearly an artist much respected on his home island, and of much more than merely sentimental interest.

The second painting is not uninteresting. The position of the hand and some other details evoke the portrait of Marguerite de Lorraine by Van Dyck.
