Looks like Alex Colville's style. Probably not, of course, but that's the only suggestion I have.

Oh, this information may help. (I'm the original poster, by the way).
I was told that this painting was downloaded from a site in St. Petersburg years ago. I don't know what exactly that means, but maybe the Russian connection has some significance? |

Well the Hermitage Museum is in St. Petersburg. I don't think they have too much contemporary art in the main part of their collection, but they always have temporary exhibitions coming and going.
