Default My Great-Great Uncle had this, but I can't ID the artist...

Here are a few pictures of the painting left to my Grandfather by my Great-Great Uncle Si (as in "sigh") Sisson. My Grandfather passed away recently, so in going through the estate, we came across this painting. None of us has been able to ID the author's signature, so can anyone help me out? Si was quite a wealthy man in his time, so I have to think this might hold some value. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Can you post a big picture of the signature? Or email it to me?

Believe it or not, it looks similar to a signature I have been trying to read for some time. The style
of the painting is not very similar, so it's probably just a coincidence. But you never know.

My email is jmalyon, at (@) the domain artcyclopedia.com. Thanks.

Here's a better pic of the signature. It looks like "Peto", and there is a John Frederick Peto who did most of his oil paintings around 1895, but the signatures on those works aren't the same.

I also found this on the back of the frame. Notice how the number "4" (I think) matches the dating on the front.

Here is the whole backside:

I had sent an email to the Curator of American Art at the Smithsonian. Here is the response I got:

"Dear Mr. Nelson,

Thank you for your email regarding John Frederick Peto. The John Frederick Peto and Peto Family papers have recently been scanned and made available online: http://www.aaa.si.edu/collections/se...ch_string=peto. If there is any information at the Archives of American Art on your painting, this material will be your best source.

Outside of our collections, there may be some helpful resources listed in the guide to researching your art produced by the Smithsonian American Art Museum: http://americanart.si.edu/research/tools/art/.

I hope this information is helpful to you. Please let me know if you have any additional questions."

I have looked through the archives a little, but I can't find anything that suggests that this painting was done by John Peto, but I still need to look at the rest of the Peto family. Anyone else want to have a look and see what they think?
