Default Help Identify Painting "War Scene - Horses/Soldiers/Fire

Any help appreciated. Painted on 18" x 24" canvas, stretched over wooden frame. There is a name/signature on the bottom left of the painting (hidden in the detail of the red tapestry. It is in black and reads "MONDROI(L) MONBOI(L). It was purchased in Amherstburg Ontario - previously "Fort Malden".

Thanks Mary

Findartinfo.com has an artist name search function that can accept wildcards and partial names. That might be worth playing with.

P.S. I checked the Getty Museum's large ULAN database... The only name that seems remotely close is "Mondieu", for example as in Jean Gaspard Etienne Mondieu (French genre painter, born 1872).

Thanks for the info and the leads John. I am so pleased I found you. I hope someone can identify the uniform, which would give a new research point. Mary

Default Edouard Detali 1899 ??

Here is the same scene as the original I have, with a few differences in the painting. Found this today at Dargate Auction House ..... Description: "1098 DEAD SOLDIERS AND HORSES OIL. Done on lightweight canvas adhered to plywood. Signed Edouard Detali 1899. Comes from a Pittsburgh home where it was displayed in situ."

http://www.dargate.com/220_auction/2...es/220comp.htm

I wonder if the name on the saddle blanket that I have "Monobol" could be the name of the soldier?

Where do I go from here? Thanks for any other help out there. ..... Mary, Ontario Canada

"Edouard Detali" must certainly be "Edouard Detaille". If you Google him you'll see many military scenes of this type. Maybe both paintings are copies of the same famous Detaille painting, although if so I didn't find it yet.

Then, the word "mondroi" could be a part of the french motto of the british monarch : Dieu et mon droit

Default Thanks Mark

Thank you Mark for your help. Something exciting for me to research. What you say makes sense. I'll get out the magnifying glass and take a closer look at the signature on the horse blanket or saddle blanket. Mary
