Ive been looking for this painting for years. I first saw it in MOMA in New York City about 2 years ago. I don't believe its there anymore because ive gone back more than once looking for it.
It is a small watercolor about 11x17". It is a scene of a path leading to a beach, possibly with a rickety fence lining the pathway...one that you would see going to any public beach. The colors are cool and inviting. the paint layed on very gently with diluted blues and greens with bits of yellow. The most important part of this painting is the quote on the bottom. In German it says something that begins with "Mit Ruckenwind...Der Weg". This quote is what I'm so interested in. The artist is a man who is obviously German with a very common german last name which unfortunately I cannot remember. If anyone knows the name of the artist, painting, or has any information on the quote I would be forever grateful! |

I can't find the exact watercolour, but this sounds very much like Max Liebermann, especially his Beach at Katwijk/ Am Strand von Katwijk

UHG so close but no cigar. Although Liebermanns style is very similar to the artist I am looking for. Thanks for the attempt. I will search for this quote to the death.

Is it possible the work was part of a temporary exhibition and that's why you can't find it again? Here's a link to a list of the MoMA's past exhibitions, by year:
