Battle of Lights, Coney Island, Mardi Gras (1913-14)
This is a wonderful painting by Joseph Stella, imho, and I know it depicts Luna Park at Coney Island, NY, but does anyone know what the letters in the middle stand for?
The word 'PARK' presumably relates to Luna Park, but what about the 'COM'?
I'm fascinated to see if anyone knows. I've tried searching on Google and looking in a few art reference books but I haven't stumbled on it anywhere. Maybe it means nothing at all, but it seems slightly odd that I can't find any art historians or critics who have commented on it - those letters just float around in the middle of the canvas and no one seems to see them!
Its also very possible that I'm missing the point or simply looking in all the wrong places. Please enlighten me if you happen to know, I'd be very grateful.
Thanks,
Sarah
