Hello, I have just recently discovered this site, and need a little bit of help. My father has a painting, and has had it foor a long time, of Diana the huntress (that is in Roman mythology, in greek she is referred to as Artemis) with her nymphs on a hunt. It is a very beautiful painting, and we estimate it to be at least 100 to 150 years old. The only information I have on this is that Hans Makart, an Austrian artist, has painted almost exactly the same scene, yet it is not the same painting. Here is a link to the Hans Makart painting entitled "Die jagd der Diana" or in English "The hunt of Diana". http://hoocher.com/Hans_Makart/The_H...ana_1879. jpg
I have enclosed a picture of the painting as well. I would appreciate any help with this. I look forward to hearing back from you all. Thank you for your time..... |

Sometimes artists painted multiple copies or versions of their most popular paintings -- this was before mechanical reproduction was possible, so it was the only way to satisfy demand for especially successful works. Also, unfortunately, sometimes forgeries are patterned after existing paintings by the same artist. If you're pretty sure it's an original painting rather than a print, probably the best thing would be to find an expert who has knowledge of Makart's work, or at the very least work of this era.

The Mackart painting you give the link to is only a sketch. The final version, which was 30ft wide, once belonged to the Metropolitan Museum but they sold it in 1929 - when it was out of fashion - to Mr Ringling of circus fame - but the Ringling Museum of Sarasota don't seem to have it either and I can't find it on the net. However there is a wood engraving on ebay at the moment, which was presumably made after the 30ft painting and includes all the details that are in your picture but not in the sketch, such as the bird in the foreground. Presumably your picture is a work on paper derived from this version.
