the painting i am searching for has a (?little girl? small child?) around the corner of a building and there is this ominous shadow on the other side... i am pretty sure it is surrealist but not 100%.. i know it isn't dali.... it has been many years since i discovered it, but it was in an art class, so it must be someone pretty famous to learn about in college...

Could it be this "the Melancholy and Mystery of a Street " by Giorgio de Chirico ? http://www.usc.edu/schools/annenberg...mages/692.html

I think I know of the one you are referring to. I haven't seen it in years either. Is the child in the foreground? Perhaps holding a teddy bear? A shadow of a man? If I remember correctly it was in shades of blues and greys. I wonder if it was used for a poster for abused or missing children at one time.
