Hello Everyone,
Does anyone know anything about this drawing? Please help if you do. I know my changes to find out its origin are small but I would like to try anyway. This drawing has been in our house when my family moved in 15 years ago. There seems to be no signature. Thank you all in advance. |

This drawing seems to be a 19th cent. interpretation of the child on the right in the painting by Van Dyck "Portrait of the children of Charles the 1st"
http://www.gutenberg.org/files/17478...es/image46.jpg here is a better image (very long link, I hope it works here) http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_U0RpAJQHmL...a,%2BTurin.jpg EDIT : My answer above is exact but incomplete. The author of your drawing after Van Dyck could be an italian artist, Giovanni Battista Canevari (1789-1876). This painter made a pastel after the painting of Van Dyck which is in the Gallery of the Academy of San Luca- Rome. http://www.accademiasanluca.it/sched...inventario=347 You can see some difference with your drawing but the National Photographic archives of Italia gives three photos of similar works by Canevari, all three suposed to be in the Academy of San Luca. I can't decide if two of these photos are for the same work but the three shots clearly concern the pastel in one hand and at least one different drawing in the other hand. On the following page, write exactly "giovanni battista canevari" in the field "Autore opera..." don't worry about the other fields then click "ricerca" and scrolldown the opening page. http://immagini.iccd.beniculturali.i...=VIEW&LANG=ITA At the beginning of the 20th century, the french "Comité national de l'enfance" (National Committee for childhood) used a drawing by Canevari for a postcard as other postcard editors. It is not the Pastel of the Academy San Luca because this postcard reproduces the signature of Canevari on the left and the text "Studi di Van Dyck" on the right when the pastel bears only the signature on the left. http://cartes-postales.delcampe.net/...nDescription=N In fact, Canevari apparently met a great success with this drawing and certainly made several copies after himself. A specimen (pastel) was in the catalog of a Bonham's auction sale on sept.13 2005 and was withdrawn http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/publi...iSaleLotNo=163 Another one (probably the sample used by the french Childhood National Committee) is in the catalog of a german Antiques dealer and (in my opinion) at very low price. http://www.bierl-antiquariat.de/shop...etail&id=31126 Now, do you own a drawing by the hand of G.B.Canevari or a drawing made after the work of this artist? The answer needs a real contact with the work but we could temporarily consider all possibilities. Last edited by saintmarc : October 4th, 2009 at 04:04 PM. |

saintmarc,
Thank you very very much. You not only identified the drawing, but gave a very detailed description supported with further references. I did not expect to learn this much. Again, I appreciate your help. |
