I now have an artist and a title for the painting I've been looking for, but the more I look at it, the less sure I am. So, I went looking. What I found is that at least 2 other artists have works of the same name, after the original artist. I don't even know how to go about finding a copy of a copy! The original artist and work is The Schism by J.G. Vibert.

From what I can make out, the definitive version - the one exhibited at the Paris Salon - is now in the Wadsworth Atheneum, their website however only mentions it in passing; they don't show a picture, or advertise a reproduction for sale. Vibert himself apparently made more than one version.
