A recent acquisition in my collection of religious art is a gilt silver octaconal pendant with a miniature painting on mother of pearl (7 x 5.5 cm). At one side is a statue of Mary, surrounded by four smaller scenes of monks venerating this statue. At the other side the Adoration of the Magi. The style of the frame points to the end of the 17th century.
I am looking for information about miniature painting on mother of pearl in Western Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries? In all literature about minitatures I can read about painting on vellum, paper, enamel, metal etc., but nothing is said about mother of pearl. |

Dear Sanctus,
I can point you to research Byzantine sources, from where the technique originates. For example, the base cote for painting is garlic juice mixed with nail mucus. I also recommend books by prof. M. Medic- " Old painting techniques" , I believe it is available in English. Best luck, greeting Sabo. |
