Hmm... I found a half dozen examples of that artist's works online, and they were all signed "Donald Barton" or "Donald B. Barton". They also don't have that distinctive scratchy look that the paintings posted in this thread have. My guess, although this is only a guess, is that your painting is by a different Barton.

...To be honest, I believe the suggestions that the Barton paintings are mass produced in China sound correct. Here is a link to a company selling a Barton painting where they seem to be acknowledging that it comes from a workshop in China.

I have been looking for some one who can help me to find who's Barton is because I have the same exactly paint of Ian. Two year ago I found Donald Blagge Barton in a New Hampshire Antique co-op; I sent them some pictures of my painting; and they said this is not the same Barton. If you see the signature is the same of the paintings pictures you posted. I'm thinking that this artist is from Europe or Australia. I really don't know, but if some one find some thing, let me know, I'm very interested.

I have an oil painting of a cityscape (NY) very similar to the first inquiry. It looks like people walking along the street with a store/ building in the background, a bare tree, and trees with leaves changing, a tall street light, and skyscrapers. The picture looks like it is fall and a rainy afternoon/ the people have coats and hats on. The picture is framed and nailed to the frame. The canvas is stapled to a stretcher bar frame. This picture was left behind in a home we bought 18 years ago in California. The name "Barton" is in red all capitals on the lower right side. I just ripped off the paper (dust protector) back to see if there was anymore information and found none. It is definitely an oil painting, impressionistic. I liked it because it reminded me of my son who had recently moved to NYC to work in the theatre industry. Set designer and builder (still there, still working). Also there is nothing more beautiful than Autumn in NY.

@John just because it came from china , that does not make it any less "art worthy " I would have thought. There are other artist producing differnt styles as far as i can see. They have been hand painted. The subject matter that appears to be favoured by the popular "Barton" on here, is that of nude women facing away from the painter, he has a way of making the arse, well, come alive . I purchased mine about 10 years ago for fifty pounds from a guy selling it in north London on the streets. I don't often get taken by art. I simply loved it and had to have it.

I don't mean to disparage his work. Heaven knows enough people have bought his paintings and been quite happy with them. After Leonard Campbell Taylor, he's probably the second most asked-about painter here. But being sold the way they are, I don't think they're ever going to be too valuable.

Donald Barton was my grandfather. Lots of information available on the internet or from me - he produced hundreds of portraits, watercolors, and oil paintings during the 1900's and is a Rockport artist. The Barton that others have with barton in red letters is not the same artist as far as I know - the style looks different...

I have a Barton original oil painting I bought about 5 years ago. It is signed in Red letters lower right corner of painting "BARTON". I have been researching his work online and find several websites showing his work. Yes i believe this is the same artist Donald Barton from MA, as several of the paintings are signed the same . The scene appears to be of a polo match . It's a beautiful painting- he was a very talented artist!

Factory paintings from China have been appearing in auctions attributed to Donald B. Barton, 1903-1990, Fitchburg, MA painter. They are signed in red "BARTON". They are not by him, as his granddaughter has said in messages below. I was his rep from 1987-1992 and catalogued all the paintings he had in his possession.

I have this same painting and am wondering if I should toss it. My Dad bought it back in the 70s and it's taking space in my closet. It is very possible that he bought it in Taiwan. I remember visiting lots of art galleries with him and he bought several paintings--very cheap--while living there. |
